What is a “Green Roof?”
A “Green Roof” is a roof that is more eco-friendly and sustainable than conventional roofs. In addition to benefiting the environment, green roofs usually benefit building owners by significantly reducing energy bills.
What kinds of Green Roofs are there?
There are several different types of green roofing products. Some green roofing solutions are more expensive than others, however, all green roofs will ultimately save you money!
- Cool Roofs - Cool roofs are roofs that boast a high SRI (solar reflectivity index) Value. The higher the SRI, the more light and heat is reflected off of the roof. Cool roofs can take the form of shingles, epdm, or specialty coatings. Cool roofs are usually the least expensive “green” roofing solution. This doesn’t mean that they are not effective. Cool roofs can save more than 30% on energy bills!
- Vegetated Roofs - Vegetated roofs are roofs that actually have vegetation growing on them. Vegetative roofs usually have around 12″ of soil and a variety of different grasses and trees on them. They have many benefits. Vegetative roofs lower a building’s energy costs, offer occupants a courtyard area, and reduce storm water runoff. These systems are expensive and usually utilized for commercial applications.
- Solar Roofs - Solar roofs refer to roofs that are fitted with a solar, or photovoltaic (PV), system. This includes solar panels, shingles, or peel and stick PV systems. Solar roofs generate clean, quiet, and renewable solar energy. Solar roofs lower a building’s energy costs by using self-generated electricity.
